Overview
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a condition in which unexplained and sudden death of infant (younger than 1 year) takes place. The condition is considered as leading cause of death in children, who lies in the age group of 1 months and 1 year old. In most of the cases, SIDS death occurs when babies are in between the age of 2-4 months. The condition is common in United States. As compared to girls, boys fall victim of SIDS

Causes
The health experts are unable to predict the exact cause of the condition. Some factors that can increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome are:
- Poor parental care
- Low birth weight or prematurity
- Smoking, drug used in pregnancy, drinking, etc.
- Stomach sleeping
- Mothers younger than 20 years of age

Some of the ways that help in preventing the condition are:
- Make babies sleep at their back; avoid babies to sleep at their tummy.
- Place babies on crib mattress, which is covered with fitted sheet
- Never keep babies at too hot temperature
- Keep loose bedding and soft objects and toys away from sleep area
